While we praise alternatives for milk, such as oats and almonds, the ‘water footprint of such alternatives is something to consider.
The term ‘water footprint’ describes the total amount of water required to produce it. In comparison to other nuts, like almonds and cashews, peanuts have a notably smaller footprint. To produce almond milk, a lot of pesticides are used and water consumed. But while it requires more resources to produce, it does emit a lot less greenhouse gases vs. dairy milk. Soy and oat milk also require less than almond.
Peanuts are also a very sustainable option as the byproduct from each step of processing can be reused for some other purpose.
