Victoria Memorial is the most elegant and famous monuments in the heart of Kolkata. This vast white structure is made of Makrana Marble brought in from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. It is the same type of marble from which the #tajmahal was built. The Memorial is situated on 64 acres of land. Another beauty of the #victoriamemorial is its sprawling gardens and lush green lawns.
History -In 1876 the British parliament made Victoria the Empress of India. The monument was announced by Lord Curzon, viceroy of India, shortly after Victoria’s death. The project took 20 years to complete because of problems with funding. He appealed to the people of India and the royalties to donate funds generously. A whooping One crore Five Lacs rupees(Rs.1,05,00,000) which were the cost to build the monument was donated by the people of India and the royalties. The statue of the Queen was sculpted in England. Before the Victoria Memorial was erected, the location housed Presidency Jail, which was later demolished from there and relocated to Alipore, to construct the memorial. The Prince of Wales, King George V, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906, and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.
