Today work brought me to the ruins of the small fort where Ponce De Leon lived in Puerto Rico. There is a tiny museum where a very enthusiastic woman described the ornate and brutal artifacts of the conquistador in Spanish and English. There were physical weapons as well as spiritual ones for the conversion of native people, who were completely wiped out on the island (mostly, it’s a long story). The Americas we all share were built on a foundation of violence. It is in our blood and soaked into the dirt and rocks. We are at our core a violent people. I attach no value judgement to this, simply a fact we confront. Some constructively some destructively. When we left the tiny museum we could hear a group of nearby children singing Feliz Navidad at at a school on the other side of the trees. They are heirs to it all, and if we conduct ourselves right they will turn out better than us, as we hopefully resolved some part of our history before us. Also, as a friend asked, yes I pronounced “Ponce De Leon” the Atlanta (or “Alanna”) way. #history #archaeology #nativeamerican #poncedeleon #oldweapons #arepas #avocados #atlanta

Trial piece of Akhenaten, on the reverse a horse's head 🇪🇬 ca. 1353–1336 B.C. This unfinished study of the head of Akhenaten was one of a number excavated by Flinders Petrie and Howard Carter in 1891–92 from the sculptors' workshops at Tell el-Amarna, the new royal capital founded by Akhenaten. It came to the Museum from the collection of Lord Amherst, who sponsored the excavations. It shows the king in a more naturalistic style. The characteristic attributes of the portraits of the king—long almond-shaped eyes, full lips, elongated jaw and chin, and sloping brow—are present but without the exaggeration associated particularly with the early portraits. These studies may have served as models for or practice pieces by the sculptors carving the reliefs for the huge Aten temples that the king was building in order to worship according to his own unorthodox interpretation of the religion of ancient Egypt; it is also possible that some may have been employed as donation pieces. Period: New Kingdom, Amarna Period Dynasty: Dynasty 18 Reign: reign of Akhenaten Geography: From Middle Egypt, Amarna (Akhetaten), Sculptors' workshop near south end of the town Medium: Limestone Present location: Metropolitan Museum. #ancientegypt#egypt#thisisegypt#ancient#history#antiquities#archaeology#photography#travel#tourism#hieroglyphs#ancientworld#valleyofthekings#egyptology#pyramids#art#love#instagood#photooftheday#fashion#beautiful#happy#cute#like4like#followme#picoftheday#follow#summer#instadaily#sculptures

Head of a Hippopotamus 🇪🇬 ca. 1390–1352 B.C. This extraordinarily lifelike animal head was once part of a hippopotamus statue about three feet in length. Comparisons with other sculptures from the period indicate that it was created during the reign of Amenhotep III. The seated statues that the king dedicated to the goddess Sakhmet are well known; their feline heads display hollow sinewed cheeks and knobby facial bones similar to those on the hippo. This head may have come from Amenhotep's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile opposite modern Luxor. This temple was mostly dismantled in ancient times, but the site is marked by two colossal statues of the king known as the colossi of Memnon. Excavators have found another, even larger, hippo statue, also of Egyptian alabaster, at the site. Together with hundreds of other sculptures—many of them representing deities in animal form—the hippos would have served in rituals procuring godlike status for the king. On the underside of the animal's jaw is an ancient drill hole. It may have been made for a metal support (the head is heavy) or for the insertion of the hook of a harpoon during a ritual hippopotamus hunt. Traces of red paint are preserved in furrows at the sides of the mouth. Period: New Kingdom Dynasty: Dynasty 18 Reign: reign of Amenhotep III Medium: Travertine (Egyptian alabaster) with traces of gesso and red pigment Present location: Metropolitan Museum. #ancientegypt#egypt#thisisegypt#ancient#history#antiquities#archaeology#photography#travel#tourism#hieroglyphs#ancientworld#valleyofthekings#egyptology#pyramids#art#love#instagood#photooftheday#fashion#beautiful#happy#cute#like4like#followme#picoftheday#follow#summer#instadaily#hippopotamus

"On November 7, 2019, 80 individuals came together in Jackson, Mississippi to talk about opportunities for collaboration, research, engagement, and how to improve NAGPRA implementation. The workshop, Cultivating a Community of Practice for Southeastern NAGPRA Practitioners, was part of the 76th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference (SEAC). Hoping to initiate, develop, and sustain working relationships between practitioners of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, the event was a first step in fostering a NAGPRA community of practice within the southeastern US. 🤝 The interactive workshop rotated attendees every 20 minutes through thematic groups of Tribes, National NAGPRA, Museums/Institutions, Federal/State, and Research. Experienced practitioners representing tribes, federal agencies, curators and collections managers, and agencies and institutions considered to be museums, facilitated each of these groups. They answered questions from the attendees, whose experience ranged from very little to those who are more heavily involved in NAGPRA implementation. Discussions included the importance of reevaluating and updating NAGPRA Inventories and Summaries as well as building and maintaining relationships between tribes, institutions, and agencies. 🤝 During lunch and before ending the workshop, the attendees and facilitators evaluated the workshop and participated in an open discussion about the day. This included thoughts about what did or did not work for the workshop as well as suggestions in planning for a NAGPRA event at SEAC 2020 including a separate event geared towards students. The workshop ended with a gracious gift of a handmade basket by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation to the facilitators of the workshop." 🤝 The Laboratory Operations Director Amanda Roberts Thompson was an organizer for this workshop. Hi! Thought I’d introduce myself—the lady behind the books 😆 𓋹 I’ve been interested in all things Egypt since I was little (a common tale among those fascinated with Egypt!). I got my B.A. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies. Then I proceeded to get my M.A. in Anthropology, emphasis Archaeology and a Museum Practices Certificate. 𓋹 My master’s thesis studied infant burials in Petra, Jordan. This photo is of me excavating a loculus in a tomb in Petra. I’ve only excavated in Utah and Jordan. 𓋹 I worked in various museums until last year when I had my first child and decided to spend the next couple years raising him. The purpose of this account is to share my love of reading all things Ancient Egypt and geek out over it with others 😁 𓋹 #ancientegypt #egypt #ancientegyptbooks #reading #bookstagram #ancienthistory #egyptology #books #egypthistory #loveegypt #readingancientegypt #bookcommunity #booknerd #bookish #readersofinstagram #bibliophile #bookworm #bookaddict #bookaholic #booklover #bookworm #archaeology
